Dance medi(t)ation on Path of Parables

with Orange Feather - Performance installation

Inspired with the book Judith

the Jewish Apocrypha and Deuterocanonical Book of the Christian Old Testament), the script of Croatian writers Marko Marulic "Judita",

thought in the context of current wars, murders of women, hate speech, increasing acts of violence and species worldwide...

reflected in various forms of contemporary art and new media, theoretical concepts and in dialogue with various actors, woven in a puzzle web, continuosly

re-imagined...

The story of the pious widow Judith, who goes unarmed with her servant Abra to the army camp, where she beheads the Nebuchadnezaian general Holofernes, who besieged her city of Betulia on behalf of his ruler, with his own sword,

inspired me for the creation of a fictional story,

in which an attempt is made to interpret the physical act of violence (decapitation) as a series of dialogical speech acts.

The dance meditation(t)ation sequences are conveyed as embodied speech acts,

the sword is symbolically 'formed from words', coined by vowels, breath and bodily movement

in the dialogical process with the participating audience from Dis_Tanz

The sequences from Sword Art are guded by Ursula Wagner

(with and without sword).

It's a beginning, a long journey, in process,...

The performative approach to the theme of the Peace Act J^sWord on the Path of Parables will be presented on September 30, 2022 at 6 p.m. in the Votive Church in Vienna.

The space installation "turning points" opens the dialogical process among performers with the participating audience

"He failed through the deceit of my lips"
re-imagining the physical act of violence as a set of speech acts

without reducing Judith's heroic deeds and without looking for words that, as with hate speech, lead to acts of self-violence,

but to look for ways in which insights for a peaceful solution can indeed be guided.

Holofernes was tricked by his desires,

decapitated, disempowered by Judith.

The order to conquer a people, its region, resources, was prevented by its beautiful representative Judith, because she managed to shift the  General Holofernes' view with her appearance, blinding his mind, blinding his thirst with wine to drown and accomplish the conquest herself, satiating the desires, the cravings of Holofernes for distance.

With an accomplice, her servant Abra, Judith completed her act, which she previously justified in her prayers with the act of rape that "was permitted by God," to whom God presented her plan and asked for his help, with her hand, the act to perform. (John 9:9-14)

"ruka ruku mije" ("one hand washes the other" from Croatian.) Here the complex problem of justifying acts of violence in the "name of God" takes its course, self-defence, defense as an argument, ...

Increasing acts of violence around the world, such as the current wars, femicid, hate speech leading to suicide, and calls for peace and peace building are growing louder.

Governments around the world are arming their armies, powerful defens forces are being demonstrated, investments into war industries are rapidly growing.

The instruments of war are made available so that the peace remains.

Si vis Pacem para Bellum?! make peace with war?

Diplomacy is striving for peace, counseling centers and anti-violence centers are active, however, wars, murders, various acts of violence continue...

In addition, the scarcity of vital resources is increasing and energy production is becoming a global challenge due to wars and natural disasters

Judith2030 ...

Nature "fights back" after centuries of exploitation, the call for rationalization, the sustainable development approaches are attempts to implement a new concept of peace between people and our planet, the Agenda 2030 of the United Nations with 17 sustainability goals unites humanity in its need, with visions and values that enable present and future generations to live together without further damage.

To this end, every single human being is called upon to participate, to act jointly and responsibly.

How can art contribute to peace building? What approaches can be taken from the field of dance arts?

In this project, a performative approach to peace education with contemporary dance art forms & Tai Chi sword art has been undertaken with the aim to investigate diverse attempts to the complex topic of human relations, prevention of violence and peace, in a set of collaborative sessions with diverse actors, guided with theoretical concepts deriving from feminist education (Irigaray, Haraway, Stengers), and applying on diverse  philosophical, theological, linguistic and pedagogical theories.

Art has been involved in all eras, in various forms of expression and types, looking at events with a critical eye, cheering various deeds, scratching them into collective memory ...

At present, attempts are also being made to use contemporary art forms to question everyday life, actions and attitudes, to use new media and technologies to expand the limits of human thought.

However, artists cannot prevent wars, but point to the possibilities of how things could be different, which practices can help the individual in his or her environment so that coexistence is better and more peaceful ...

My research journey have led me to discover inspiring works of the nun Silja Walter.

In her confrontation with life crises, pain and suffering, the nun Maria Hedwig (1919-2011), born Silja Walter, devoted herself to her life in the monastery behind the closed doors of the cloister. With a critical self-view, Silja Walter reflected on her life in Monastery Kloster Fahr CH . Her comprehensive literary works, music compositions, paintings, theatre plays has been published and presented in a various venues.

In her work "Dance of Obedience or the Straw Mat" (1996)

Silja Walter reflects on her dance practice in the Parament workshop of the Fahr CH monastery.

The approaches to the art of dance in Silja Walter's dance practice illustrates an example of art as a practice of pastoral care , which can be life-sustaining by the self-suction  "through conscious and intentional practices", which tightens the body and does not punish it, as described in the work of the  french Philosopher Michel Foucault.

attempts to Moral Imagination

According to JP Lederach, the goal of overcoming violence is promoted by the ability to generate, mobilize and build moral imagination.

This ability is based on the following four capacities, which are taught in 4 sequences:

1. thought experiment  as a guidance of moral imagination which, requires the ability to see oneself in a web of relationships with our neighbour that even includes our enemies.

2. Participation: Dance meditation and  Tai chi sequence  for guidance and enability to embrace complexity without becoming embroiled in social division.

3. Turning points installations in the church space as engaging space, to commit individually to the set of the creative acts within a collective

4. Participating art education: Opportunities to participate in exercise sequences " orange feather" requires acceptance of the risk that inevitably accompanies attempts to overcome violence; attunement by psalmodic chanting, using terms from dance art practice and descriptive anatomy

On the Path of Parables, prevention of violence through artistic practice has been approached as a practice of pastoral care that promotes charity:

In weapon-in-hand combat, we learn that our actions and words are effective as actions, that they can hurt and even kill. The Tai chi sword art is always an inner work on the awareness of our effectiveness towards it, and into the world. On a physical level, the sword offers several challenges: the weight throws the body off-center and pulls at the shoulders, the body needs re-centering to maintain balance. With the

Sword is rarely attacked directly, mostly it is about

Defense – or evasive techniques. The practitioner's attention should be aimed at involving the sword at each stage and bringing the energy to the point of the

to wield the sword. Once used as a weapon in battle, today the sword is the

ritual and spiritual importance. It symbolizes the ability to cut through the veil of illusion, ego and attachment, and to close the mind as it were

to free. The goal of martial arts is not to defeat our enemies,
but the practice of martial arts is a way to conquer ourselves.

Ursula Wagner on her practice of swordsmanship:

I have been practicing Qi Gong and Taiji in the Taiji Arts association since 2015. In the course of time weapon forms, mainly sword and sabre, later also stick and fist forms from the Tanglang (praying mantis style) were added. For the project I chose a piece from the Taiji _Sword because the Qi (imagination) is particularly important here.

Chinese swordsmanship is one of the Kung Fu (Gong Fu) martial arts. Translated, kung fu or gong fu means nothing more than practicing something/ being able to do something well. The individual figures all have a name (e.g. the immortal shows the way, turning around to see the tiger, the bees returning to the nest. ... Etc

Although all sword movements are for combat and violence against the opponent, practicing is more about enabling myself to avoid combat if possible. As the sword becomes one with my mind, the extension of my Yi (energy), so to speak, I enable myself to think clearly and purposefully, to control and channel my emotions. U. Wagner

With the inclusion of various forms of writing and languages in the composition of movement sequences, the power of individual terms becomes apparent chanting as a form of mediation, the effect of various sounds on the imagination and thus on the associative images that are evoked when pronouncing and/or hearing sound combinations and concepts is individually reflected in various forms, making the sensitivities with related memories and ideas conscious perceived and thereby given the opportunity to first check the hasty reactions and actions, to pause, to wait and to prevent possible damage.

For this purpose, dance art practice can be understood as a form of spiritual practice that can be continued as an independent care for pastoral care.

The language game with phonetic exercises, which are accompanied by body movement sequences and short ventilation exercises through controlled breathing sequences, have already been tried out with children, adolescents and adults. The 3-system movement sequences with 2-ventilation can be performed independently and without special equipment within various rooms and spatial positions, across generations and even without special previous knowledge and talents for dance, languages and breathing techniques.

The symbol signs for all 3 path stations will be at the church entrance

placed in a turning point-circle at the “Plaza tent”.

Art-based practical research in dialogue with researchers and artists since 2021

This was guided by the question, “What if, the sword was just a word”. j^sWord Project started in 2021 and has already been further developed in several forms. The goal of practical research is to look for opportunities to practice peace in dialogue. Methods: experimental exercise sequences for ethical imagination using thought experiments and somatic practices such as dance meditation(t)ation

Facts, stressors:
increasing domestic violence in Austria and worldwide, femicide, #hatespeech, wars

The methods and exercise sequences developed during my 28 years of teaching activity such as

Feather Salute and the Feather Flight Meditation Sequence,

have so far been tested with children, adults and young people, the concept and methods were presented at the workshop in 2021 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the European Day of Languages initiative in Belgrade/Serbia in cooperation with the Austrian Cultural Forum Belgrade.[1] Federflug thought experiment was also presented in July 2022 in London, at the "Wittgenstein and AI" symposium at the New College of Humanities.[2] Also in July 2022, the Orange Feather Initiative[3] presented at the Sibenik Dance Festival in Croatia and a young ambassador of this initiative was appointed.[4]

The j^sWord project is also included as part of the Initiative Orange Feder & arts4orange which I started at the ACD-Agency for Cultural Diplomacy Association as President of the Association in 2021. The project arts4orange and the Orange Spring Initiative were awarded the Austrian SDG Award in the category for and by young people on May 9th, 2022. [5]
