Women.Languages.Literary Landscapes2030

About the project

The works of two educators, MMargarete Schörl from Austria and the Jagoda Truhelka Works from Croatia form the bridge between historical literary works and contemporary literature and art.

The main goal of the project is to guide further sustainable cooperation through educational partnerships at the county level of Central European countries and beyond.
The literary field offers a broad landscape for encounters, exchange, and bridge building.

On behalf of the Lower Austrian Department of Culture, works from the Literature Edition Lower Austria were presented at the Austrian Library in Osijek, Croatia, on the occasion of the annual celebration of the European Day of Languages 2019.
Including text passages from two works of the Lower Austrian Quarter Anthology,
"My Mostviertel" and "My Danube" became the names for the geographical landscape of Lower Austria.
presented in a literary style.
Furthermore, the poetry collection was Calve(2019) by author Maria Seisenbacher, presented.
Thematically and temporally far removed from the Danube, the author deals with glaciers and mythology in her work "kalben".
With her poetic language, the author forms a sonic bridge to the mystical figures of blessed women from the Alps.
The theme of female figures in poetry and mythology was brought into current discourses with the presentation of the fourth work I selected: gender equality.
The anthology "Women.Voting.Right" was published in 2018, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in Austria, with a historical overview by Corinna Oetsch and includes texts by Lower Austrian authors of different generations on the current political situation, such as the passages on the #MeToo debate.

The four works presented were chosen based on four thematic pillars for the development of the mediation format:
Landscape (nature, literature), people (equality, women's rights), resources (here languages), relationships (counties of Lower Austria-Slavonia through cooperation between authors, cultural enterprises and educational institutions).

Schorl-Truhelka

For the presentation of works from the Lower Austrian Literature Edition, the author Dr. Doris Kloimstein was invited by Tatjana Christelnbauer to present her literary format and book “Perpetual Calendar Sayings” and to establish a bridge from the literary to the pedagogical field with an introduction to the pedagogical approach of Austrian pioneer in the field of elementary education, Mater Margarethe Schörl.

The educational approach of Croatian author and educator, Jagoda Truhelka, was presented by Dr. Marina Vinaj (Museum of Slavonia).

What connects MM Schorl with Jagoda Truhelka?

The Schörl pedagogy is a socio-pedagogical concept in early childhood education institutions, named after Mother Margarete Schörl (September 27, 1912, Vienna – December 4, 1991, St. Pölten), a nun of the Congregation of Jesus ("English Ladies"). It is based on the premise that professional education can only be responsibly provided on the foundation of humanistic values. These values are as follows:
Human dignity, solidarity, common good, subsidiarity, freedom and responsibility.

Jagoda Truhelka (February 5, 1864, Osijek – December 17, 1957, Zagreb) was a Croatian educator (of Czech descent on her father's side, Danube Swabian on her mother's) and writer. Truhelka placed a love for the Croatian language at the heart of her teaching. She also emphasized the importance of language cultivation at home.
The teacher must know the psychological level of the student's development and awaken in him a love for the Croatian language."
Truhelka was of the opinion that
that in the initial phase one should exclude grammar and at the same time pay greater attention to language and literary material.
She wrote novels and short stories in which she explored the lives of peasant and lower-middle-class women, and was the first to portray the intellectual figure of women. The most significant part of her work is a series of books dedicated to children. In her didactic and methodological writings, she focused particularly on the role of the teacher. In 1910, she authored a work on education, "U carstvu duše" (In the School), consisting of 27 letters, which is considered a standard text for teacher training.

Building on the approaches to humanistic education
by MM Schörl (Dr. Doris Kloimstein) and Jagoda Truhelka (Dr. Marina Vinaj)
A literary-pedagogical bridge could also be established.

The Global Sustainable Development Goals SDG4 (high-quality, inclusive education) SDG17 (Partnerships for the Goals) SDG3 (Good Health and Well-being) form the pillars for the development of project activities.

Schörl-Truhelka Sprachenweb2030 - Project is also being carried out within the framework of the activities of the ACD Agency for Cultural Diplomacy Club,
further developed. Cooperations with other (central) European countries are planned in this regard.

The idea of a "LanguagesWebs" is based on a concept of languages in their interwoven cultural landscape, in the concept of the European idea "United in diversity"

For the reception, a literary-culinary creation by Tatjana Christelbauer, based on a story by Jagoda Truhelka and prepared by students at the School of Tourism in Osijek using regional fruits, was presented: Bogorodicine Tresnje.
